[The following is a statement by the Labour Movement with the People (GEBRAK) that was issued during a protest action at the Ministry of Labour offices in Jakarta on November 20, 2024.]

Nabila Ramadhanty – Hundreds of workers from the Indonesian Metal Trade Workers Federation (FSPMI) and the Confederation of the All-Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPSI) inundated the Ministry of Labour offices in Jakarta on Thursday November 7.

Vitorio Mantalean, Ardito Ramadhan, Jakarta – The Constitutional Court granted of a number of points in a legal challenge submitted by labour groups related to the Omnibus Law on Job Creation (UU Cipta Kerja) on Thursday October 21.

Mediana – A total of 238 people out of 257 workers in six industrial sectors claimed that their monthly wage is not enough to meet the necessities of life. As many as 200 people or 78 percent of these are trapped in debt in order to survive each month.

Yogyakarta – Protesters from trade unions and student groups held a demonstration and long-march to commemorate International Labor Day or May Day in the Central Java city of Yogyakarta on Wednesday May 1, in which they addressed wages that are increasingly unable to cover the cost of living.

Verda Nano Setiawan, Jakarta – Presidential candidate and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto has spoken out on the government's policy direction related to workers wages in the country. Prabowo has warned workers not to put pressure on employers by demanding big wage hikes.

I Wahyu Setiawan Nugroho, Yogyakarta – A joint action organised by the 2019 May Day Action Committee has again called for decent wages for workers in the Central Java city of Yogyakarta.

Bandar Lampung – Commemorating International Labour Day or May Day, around 600 workers from various different trade unions took to the streets of Bandar Lampung in South Sumatra on Wednesday May 1.

The workers concentrated at three points in the city: the Adipura Monument, Saburai Enggal Park and the Korpri North Teluk Betung Park.

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia – The Confederation of United Indonesian Workers (KPBI) says annual minimum wage increases under the President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo administration has continued to decline every year.

Mohammad Bernie – The song Hello Hello Bandung was played and sung along to by thousands of workers who packed into the Senayan Sports Arena (Istora) in Central Jakarta as prospective presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto took to the stage alongside Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI) president Said Iqbal.

Protesters from the Aceh Labour Alliance (ABA) took part in an action commemorating International Labour Day or May Day during which they demanding that workers be paid the minimum wage and raised concerns about companies employing foreign workers (TKA).

Lalu Rahadian – A number of trade unions have chosen not to support President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo or Prabowo Subianto in the 2019 presidential elections.

Lalu Rahadian – Only days are left before simultaneous regional elections begin. The candidates taking part in the competition are using a variety of means to attract public attention in the hope of being chosen at the ballot box.

Sherr Rinn – The National Police (Polri) and the Indonesian military (TNI) have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under which Polri can request assistance from the TNI to secure protest actions and labour strikes.

David Oliver Purba, Jakarta – Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI) president Said Iqbal says that former Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok had far more courage in setting the provincial minimum wage (UMP) than the current Jakarta governor and deputy governor, Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno.

Banda Aceh – Scores of workers from the Aceh Labour Alliance (ABA) in Indonesia’s northern most province of Aceh commemorated May Day by calling on the governor to set the provincial minimum wage (UMP) for 2017 at 2.8 million rupiah a month.

Adela Eka Putra Marza – After expressing their disagreement several days ago over the setting of the Jakarta minimum provincial wage (UMP) for 2015, which has declined relative to the value of the rupiah against the US dollar, on Wednesday November 26 workers finally took to the streets to convey their demand for a revision of the UMP.

Anne Maria, Batam – The momentum of a friendly gathering with Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) general chairperson Sofyan Wanandi at the inauguration of Apindo’s Riau Islands provincial leadership board (DPP) was used by the new DPP chairperson Cahya to introduce the Bima Sakti Guard.

Jakarta – Starting in 2015, the wage remuneration system will be revised. Workers will be paid based on education level, productivity, length of employment, achievements and position. Demands for wage increases will only be implemented if a company is profitable.

Pribadi Wicaksono, Yogyakarta – The Yogyakarta Workers Alliance (ABY) has slammed the draft law on regional elections (RUU Pilkada) saying it will bring suffering to workers in the future.
