The government has responded to the twin-suicide bomb attacks in Jakarta on Wednesday night not by looking at why intolerance and religious extremism is on the rise, in particular because elements of the political elite are giving hard-line Islamic groups a free hand to spread hatred and sectarianism in order to further their own political interests, but by expediting the passage of secretive revisions to the anti-terrorism law that would give police sweeping powers of arrest, detain suspects for up to six months and employ the TNI in the so-called war against terror.
