The rapid expansion of extractive industries thanks to unruly permit issuance and pro-business bylaws has led to a series of deadly floods and landslides in several parts of Indonesia, particularly in Java, which has seen its forest cover decline from 15% in the early 1990s to 3% today. According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, around 124 million people – almost half the country's population – are now living in areas prone to landslides.
