Police and military officers have brushed off accusations of interference in the recent simultaneous regional elections and vowed to remain nonpartisan during the presidential elections in 2019.
This follows concerns over the neutrality of police and military officers after Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, a political appointee from the Golkar Party which is part of the government’s ruling coalition, inaugurated high-ranking national police officer Commander General M. Iriawan – who once served as the provincial police chief – as an acting governor to replace incumbent West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan, whose term as governor ended on June 13.
