Jakarta – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) says there are currently four attempts being pursued to systematically weaken the eradication of corruption in Indonesia.

KPK Regulation Planning and Legal Products Head Rasamala Aritonang says that the first effort is the lack of clarity in resolving the acid attack against senior KPK investigator Novel Baswedan.

Aritonang says that there is still no serious will to solve the case and it is as if the government and law enforcement officials are simply ignoring it.

“There are at least four [efforts] which we have noted based on how systematic they are. First the Novel Baswedan case which to this day has not been solved”, said Aritonang at the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) offices in Jakarta on Sunday September 8.

Aritonang said that the second is the selection of candidate KPK leaders (capim) which has attracted criticism over the selection committee’s (pansel) selection process.

“The capim selection has been noted and strongly criticised by the public related to the profiles related to the track records and history of the candidates which have been put forward by the pansel”, he said.

The third effort is the deliberation on the Draft Criminal Code (RKUHP) by the House of Representatives which appears to be rushed. In the draft being deliberated there are corruption crimes included in Articles 603 to 607.

“We submitted several notes and problems related to the consequences and problems with efforts to eradicate corruption in the future which we believe will be undermined or will provide absolutely no incentives to efforts to eradicate corruption”, said Aritonang.

The fourth effort is the revision of Law Number 30/2002 on the KPK which has suddenly emerged as an initiative from the DPR.

“It seems that the fourth effort is not something which is too excessive if we then picture it as a systematic pattern in efforts to weaken efforts to eradicate corruption”, he said. (jnp/fea)
