Jakarta – Students from the Trisakti University held a demonstration in the vicinity of the parliamentary complex in Central Jakarta on Friday May 17.
Based on video received by CNN Indonesia, the demonstration was marred by a clash between demonstrators and parliamentary internal security personnel (Pamdal).
This action took place in front of the Pancasila gate or the rear entrance of the parliamentary complex. When the protesters tried force their way into the complex a scuffle broke out with security officers and demonstrators pushing and shoving each other.
The protesters could also be seen throwing traffic cones at the officers on guard at the gate.
Meanwhile the action itself was to demand a full resolution to 12 cases of past gross human rights violations. The demonstrators also asked for a resolution to the fatal shooting of four Trisakti University students during a demonstration on May 12, 1998, or the Trisakti tragedy.
"Clean human rights violators from the government", read a banner brought by the demonstrators.
As reported by Detik.com, Central Jakarta district police chief Senior Commissioner Susatyo Purnomo Condro said that the situation is now under control.
"(The protesters) tried to force their way past the rear gate. Officer have given them space to convey their aspirations in front of the DPR [House of Representatives]", said Condro.
Condro said that the riot was able to be dealt with by the officers on duty and the situation has return to normal. (mnf/kid)
