Marlinda Oktavia Erwanti, Jakarta – The new speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, says that the eight draft laws (RUU) which were postponed by the previous DPR will be prioritised and included in the DPR’s 2019-2024 Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).
“There are eight laws which were postponed during the last period. These will of course be included in the next Prolegnas although of course the mechanisms and procedures we will use will follow the new rules of conduct”, said Maharani at the DPR building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday October 1.
Maharani did not elaborate on which eight draft laws would be prioritised. However the 2014-2019 DPR postponed eight draft laws namely the Draft Law on the Elimination of Sexual Violence (RUU-PKS), the Draft Land Law, the Draft Law on Correctional Institutions, the Draft Criminal Code (RKUHP), the Draft Law on Corporations, the Draft Law on Mining and Coal, the Draft Law on Labour and the Draft Law on Food and Drug Supervision.
Nevertheless, Maharani said that she and the other DPR leaders will study the laws before presenting them for deliberation.
“I will look at them first because the new leadership has only just been inaugurated. I will see first how were the past results of the implementation of the laws which were then postponed and whether we will discuss them under what code of conduct”, she said.
On the other hand, the politician from the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) hopes that in the future the DPR will not need to produce many laws. Because, according the Maharani, it would be better if only a small number of laws were prioritised and that this legislation be useful for the nation and the state.
“Later we will try a formulation with the four existing leaders [of the DPR], what legislation will be a priority in the future, however my hope is that the next DPR won’t need to produce too many laws although we will chose which will be a priority and the focus for the next will be those which are useful for the nation and the state”, said Maharani.
