Eva Safitri, Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Security, Politics and Legal Affairs Mahfud Md says that cases of human rights (HAM) violations are still being used as a political commodity and his ministry is serious about resolving them through a non-judicial mechanism.
“I also want to explain that HAM problems in Indonesia are in the past, are now, and are in the future, those in the past are always used as a political commodity and must be resolved”, said Mahfud at the Security, Politics and Legal Affairs Ministry in Central Jakarta on Tuesday November 19.
“And one of the ways to resolve them is, yes, we resolve them through a non-judicial mechanism because there are no victims [left alive], and the perpetrators are all gone too, and the evidence has also been lost”, he said.
Furthermore, Mahfud suggests that the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) act quickly to provide the evidence requested by the Attorney General’s Office. Because, he believes that up until now Komnas HAM has not responded with new evidence so there has been no developments in resolving the cases.
“Yes, that’s what will be resolved, if Komnas HAM has evidence its always like that right, the Attorney General’s Office returns [the case dossiers], [says] you fix this, then what’s provided isn’t a fix, again and again the response is like this, now we are clear about this”, said Mahfud.
Mahfud has asked Komnas HAM to reveal all the evidence it has found. If the evidence exists, Mahfud said he is ready to take it to court.
“I think that Komnas HAM is mature enough to know if it can indeed to this, come on, I’ll take to trail, but if indeed there isn’t any evidence then say so okay”, said Mahfud. (eva/idh)
