Lea Citra, Adi Ahdiat, Jakarta – The Labour Movement with the People (Gebrak) is urging the government to cancel plans to enact the Omnibus Law on Job Creation (Cilaka). Gebrak spokesperson Ilhamsyah says that the regulation will only benefit employers while harming workers’ groups.

“Under the formulation of setting wages per hour, in essences this is just manipulation so they (employers) can pay lower wages. Because of this, the Omnibus Law is clearly in the interests of employers, in the interests of investment”, Ilhamsyah told KBR on Monday January 20..

Ilhamsyah believes that the application of the Cilaka Law will reduce workers’ incomes, reduce the public’s spending power and increase violations against workers.

“Under a working relationship which is flexible, they (employers) can easily recruit workers. But it will also be easy to sack workers later. This is what they’re planning, how all types of work will be allowed to be outsourced and use contract labour systems”, explained Ilhamsyah.

“If currently there are only five types of jobs that can be outsourced, under the Draft Omnibus Law all types of jobs will be allowed to be outsourced. Manning the use of contract labour in all types of jobs”, he continued.

Ilhamsyah also objects to the deliberations on the Cilaka Law which have been closed and failed to accommodate the interests of trade unions.

“Labour flexibility, putting wages under pressure, the abolition of punishments for employers that commit violations, that is indeed the substance of if (the employers interests)”, explained Ilhamsyah.

“The Omnibus Law today, legal regulations which will be revised, everything, not just on labour issues, on the procurement of land, mining issues, agrarian problems, and all kinds of things will be done the interests of employers”, asserted Ilhamsyah.
