Adrial Akbar – Indonesian Trade Union Congress Alliance Confederation (KASBI) Chairperson Nining Elitos is calling for outstanding cases of human rights violations in Indonesia to be fully resolved.
Elitos made the demand while holding a demonstration to commemorate International Human Rights Day on December 10 at the Horse Statue in Central Jakarta.
"So we are also calling for human rights violations (to be resolved), both those in the past, now and those in 2019, 2020, and in 2021 during the Reform Corrupted actions, the opposition to the Omnibus Law which also saw ordinary people losing their lives", said Elitos at the Horse Statue on Saturday.
Elitos also addressed the specific cases that she wants to be resolved including the 2004 assassination of renowned human rights defender Munir Said Thalib and the 1993 abduction, rape and murder of labour activist Marsinah. Not to be forgotten, she also touched on cases of violence against farmers in different parts of the country.
"There are a variety of cases of human rights violations, starting from the cases of Marsinah, Munir, even mining communities in the regions and farmers fighting against being evicted from their land in the name of development and investment, they have also lost their lives", she said.
Elitos said that to this day there are many Indonesians who suffer restrictions on democratic space and the loss of their rights. It is because of this that she is asking the government to protect the basic rights of the public.
"Today coincides with Human Rights Day where the Indonesian nation, especially the ordinary Indonesian people today still experience restrictions on democratic space including the problem of the right to job security, the right to prosperity is becoming more distant", she concluded.
During the demonstration today, the KASBI took up six demands:
1. Annul the colonial Criminal Code enacted on December 6
2. Resolve past human rights cases
3. Fully investigate violence against the ordinary people by security personnel
4. Revoke the Omnibus Law on Job Creation and its derivative regulations
5. Reject revisions to the National Education System Law
6. Revoke Law Number 12/2011 on the Drafting of Laws and Regulations (the P3 Law)
