Vitorio Mantalean, Jakarta – A group of demonstrators calling themselves the National Democrat Student League (LMND) held a protest action in front of the General Elections Commission (KPU) on Jalan Jalan Imam Bonjol in Jakarta on Tuesday January 17.
The protesters began the action shortly after midday demanding that the KPU commissioners come out of their offices to meet with them.
"Our action is not a game, not just a sit down action. I need to covey to the KPU members [that they must] be come out [and meet us]", said one of the speakers from the command vehicle.
The protesters said they had three demands during today's demonstration. First, they asked that the KPU be audited and that they reveal the data to the public. Although they did not explain what data they meant.
"We ask for information transparency", said the speaker.
Second, they called for the election process to be halted. This was in response to several reports related to alleged election fraud committed by the KPU during the verification process for political parties wanting to take part in the 2024 elections.
Third, they asked the KPU to realise democracy that is just and fair.
As of this article being written the action was still continuing, so Jalan Imam Bonjol in front of the KPU offices is temporarily closed.
Earlier, the demonstrators were involved in a scuffle with police. They also set fire to tyres on the road in front of the KPU.
