Jakarta – A protest action by scores of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) students against the Job Creation Law (Ciptaker) has disbanded after they were involved in a scuffle with police.
The action was held in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday April 5. The protesters disbanded just before 8 pm.
Earlier, the demonstrators were involved in a scuffle with police. The police had tried to disband the protesters who had set fire to tyres and partially closed off access to traffic on Jalan Gatot Subroto from the direction of Semanggi.
Although the situation had became heated, in the end they began to disband. As of this article being written, the area in front of the DPR front gates has begun to be sterilised of protesters.
The action was held after the DPR's decision in mid-March to officially enact a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) on the Jobs Law.
They believe that there are many problematic articles in the Jobs Law. Even through the law was declared conditionally unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court in 2021, which ordered that it be revised, the government instead issued a Perppu as a solution.
"But the government instead issued a Perppu that was not very different from the Ciptaker Law", said UIN Jakarta Student Senate Chairperson Fadhil Bilad.
The DPR officially agreed to Perppu Number 2/2022 on the Job Creation Law being enacted into law on Tuesday March 21. Out of the nine political party factions in the DPR, only two factions opposed the Perppu, namely the Justice and Prosperity Party (PKS) and the Democrat Party. (thr/DAL)
