Jakarta – Protesters calling themselves the People's Justice Movement demonstrated in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) building in Jakarta on Thursday March 7 demanding that the House use its right of inquiry into election fraud.
They brought six demands including urging the DPR to accelerate the right of inquiry and for a forensic audit of the General Elections Commission's (KPU) Recapitulation Information System (Sirekap) by an independent agency.
In addition to this, they also demanded that the DPR issue a statement that fraud occurred in the 2024 elections and for a reduction in the price of rice and basic commodities.
The dozen or so protesters stood in front of the parliamentary complex gates and raised black flags in unison as they listened to a speech from the command vehicle.
The demonstration pushing for a right of inquiry took place alongside another protest action opposing an inquiry. Both camps demonstrated in front of the DPR building separated only by a concrete blockade and a line of police.
The crowd opposing a right of inquiry and calling themselves the Youth and Student Concern for the Country Movement (GPMPN) totalled around 100 people.
Although they wore student attire such as almamater jackets of different colours, it could not be astertained from which campus they came from because there were no logos on the jackets.
They brought four main demands, one of which was opposing the DPR using its right of inquiry.
The group said that an inquiry into election fraud would only be in the political interests of a certain group who would drag the country into uncertainty. (csp/rts/wis)
