Rizky Adha Mahendra, Jakarta – Protesters at an International Labor Day or May Day action near the Horse Statue in Central Jakarta set fire to two giant posters that had earlier been displayed during the demonstration.
According to Detik.com's observations at the location on Wednesday May 1, the protesters burned the two posters at the same time. The posters had pictures of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, justices from the Constitutional Court (MK) and General Elections Commission (KPU) commissioners, as well as the protesters' demands.
"Revoke the Omnibus Law on Job Creation and its derivatives, raise workers' wages", read one of the banners.
The protesters appeared to consist of various organisations including trade unions, students, activists and a coalition of civil society groups.
It did not take long for the two posters to catch fire and burn to ashes. The burning of the posters was accompanied by speeches given by a speaker from a command vehicle.
A number of demonstrations began to leave after burning the posters while others remained at the location. (rdh/fas)
Notes
The burning of the images of the Constitutional Court justices and KPU commissioners was in protest over the role they played in the 2024 presidential and legislative elections which many see as illegitimate due to widespread electoral fraud.
