The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) commemorated International Human Rights Day in Jakarta on Thursday December 10 by holding a People's Voice Festival titled the Human Rights Carnaval (Karnaval HAM).
According to Kumparan's observations, the event began with protesters marching from the YLBHI building in the Menteng suburb of Central Jakarta to the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) on Jalan Latuharhary, where they submitted a symbolic letter of demands.
The series of events began with activities involving civil society, student and community activists and various other networks.
People who still have problems with human rights issues such as Cilincing fisher people, Rumpin farmers, residents of Bayam Village and Penjaringan residents could also be seen participating in the Human Rights Carnaval long-march.
Following this, the demonstrators, consisting of more than 100 participants, continued the action to the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle before returning to the starting point.
During the long-march, the participants brought protest materials such as an ogoh-ogoh (a giant puppet moved by a person inside it), posters and banners which were accompanied by a drum band and logistics support including a medical team.
In the afternoon through to early evening a free speech forum was held at the YLBHI building from 2 pm to 6 pm. The free speech forum provided space for participants to articulate various issues and was accompanied by music and karaoke entertainment.
The closing event will be a live music concert that will begin at 6.30 pm and end at 10 pm.
