Amid a public outcry over rampant sexual violence against women and girls, President Widodo has signed a regulation that could lead to child rapists being chemically castrated or even executed. Women's rights activists however say it is a knee jerk reaction that will be ineffective and fails to address the key real issues of law enforcement, prevention and rehabilitation of victims, and are urging lawmakers start deliberations on a long overdue sexual violence bill.
