Syakirun Ni'am, Icha Rastika, Jakarta – A Kompas Research and Development (Litbang Kompas) survey has revealed that 61.3 percent of respondents say they are dissatisfied with the performance of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for the period 2019-2024.
These findings were revealed in a survey of 530 respondents covering 38 provinces. Litbang Kompas was seeking to take a snapshot of the public's hopes regarding the selection of new candidate KPK leaders (Capim) that is currently underway.
"More than half of the respondents (61.3 percent) in the poll stated that they were dissatisfied with the performance of the KPK for this period", said Litbang Kompas researcher MB Dewi Pancawati as quoted by Kompas.id, Monday July 29.
Pancawati said that only 34.9 percent or one third of respondents felt that the KPK's performance was satisfactory. According to Pancawati, these findings need to be of concern to the KPK candidate leaders selection committee (Capim Pansel) in making their choice.
Pancawati said that over the last four years there has been many dynamics within the KPK that have impacted on its image.
Based on the results of a face-to-face Litbang Kompas survey for the December 2023 period, the KPK's image reached its lowest level ever, 47.5 percent, under President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's leadership.
The 2019-2024 period has indeed been tarnished by the polemic over the KPK leadership.
After serving less than two years, President Widodo issued a Presidential Decree (Keppres) to dismiss KPK Chairperson Firli Bahuri and his deputy, Lili Pintauli Siregar.
Bahari was declared a suspect in a case of alleged extortion, bribery and gratification over his handling of a corruption case involving former Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL).
Meanwhile, Siregar was tripped up over an ethical case for receiving luxury facilities in the form of tickets to watch a MotoGP motorbike racing event on Lombok Island and hotel accommodation.
Furthermore, the Litbang Kompas survey revealed that 43.7 percent of respondents said that leadership figures who are honest and clean are needed by the nation today.
Then, 18.5 percent are hoping for figures that are brave and firm, 12.8 percent want leaders that can be trusted, 9.3 percent want figures with integrity and competence and 7.1 percent want people who are independent.
"The other criteria expected by the public are independent figures (who are not easily influenced)", said Pancawati.
The survey was conducted by telephone on July 22-24 and involved 530 respondents from 38 provinces. The sample was determined randomly from the Litbang Kompas respondent panel according to the population of each province.
The survey had a 95 percent level of confidence and the margin of error of around 4.32 percent. The survey was fully financed by the Kompas daily.
Earlier, the KPK leadership selection committee announced as many as 236 participants were declared to have passed the administrative selection process. The participants who passed were dominated by academics.
The names of candidates who passed the administrative process was announced on Wednesday July 24 through the Ministry of State Secretariat's website (www.setneg.go.id) and the KPK website (www.kpk.go.id).
On July 31 or the day after tomorrow, participants who passed the administrative selection will take a written test at the State Civil Servant Competency Development Centre at the Ministry of State Secretariat on Jalan Gaharu I Number 1 in Cilandak, South Jakarta.
