Agus Setyadi, Jogja – Two men in the Acehnese provincial capital of Banda Aceh were caught having sexual relations after local residents broke into their boarding house room. The gay couple had previously arranged to meet to do a college assignment.
As reported by Detik Sumut on Thursday January 30, the case of the gay couple (liwath, sexual intercourse between two men) is being tried at the Banda Aceh Shariah (Islamic) Court.
Based on the court's website the suspect AI initially picked up the other man with the initials DA at the Darussalam Kopelma student dormitory on Thursday November 7, 2024.
They then drove to AI's boarding house in Syiah Kuala district. Upon arrival at the boarding house, it was suspected that the two were making out.
DA then returned to his dormitory ahead of evening prayers. The pair then promised to meet again later that night. At around 7 pm DA returned to AI's boarding house where they intended to work on a college assignment.
In the indictment it alleged that after they finished working on the assignment, both of them slept in the room while hugging. Both are alleged to have had a sexual relationship. Their actions ended when a resident of with the initials YS broke down the door of the boarding room. AI and DA were still naked at that time.
Following the incident, AI and DA were handed over to the Sharia Police (Wilayatul Hisbah, WH). After undergoing the examination, the case was handed over to the court.
Both have been charged with violating Article 63 Paragraph (1) of Aceh Qanun (bylaw) Number 6/2014 on Islamic Law (jinayat). Based on information on the sipp.ms-bandaaceh.go.id website, the case is scheduled to be heard again on Monday February 3 with the reading out of the prosecutor's demands. (apu/rih)
