[The following is an abridged translation of a statement by the United Socialists (Perserikatan Sosialis, PS) in response to Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's January 11 public statement in which he officially acknowledged that gross human rights violations have taken place in Indonesia and expressed his regret over these incidents.]

Jakarta – Maria Katarina Sumarsih, the mother of one of the victims of the Semanggi I incident, Bernardinus Realino Norma Irmawan or Wawan, says that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's statement on past gross human rights violations is nothing more than image building.

Dian Erika Nugraheny, Jakarta – Human rights activists have cast doubts on President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's pledge to settle 12 cases of gross human rights violations acknowledged by the government through legal or judicial channels.

Singgih Wiryono, Jakarta – Amnesty International Indonesia insists that the only way to prevent human rights violations from happening again is by trying the perpetrators in court.

Jakarta – A victim of the 1965 gross human rights violations, Bedjo Untung, is urging President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to revoke all legislation inherited from former president Suharto's New Order (Orba) regime that discriminate against victims of the 1965 killings.

Singgih Wiryono, Jakarta – The wife of the late human rights activist Munir Said Thalib, Suciwati, says that Indonesian presidents have never seriously tried to solve the assassination of her husband.

Jakarta – The Setara Institute for Peace and Democracy says that the presidential decree or Keppres on the formation of a team for the non-judicial resolution of past gross human rights violations, which was signed recently by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, will reinforce impunity and absolve perpetrators of past human rights violation

Achmad Nasrudin Yahya, Jakarta – A proposal by Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan that active TNI (Indonesian military) officers be allowed to occupy positions in state ministries and institutions is seen as an effort to revive the TNI's dual socio-political function (dwifungsi).

Leon Kastayudha – The Draft Criminal Code (RKUHP) initiated by bourgeois politicians contains a series of problematic regulations which in essence legalise despotism and at the same time facilitate the extension of capitalist exploitation – the very thing that was the main target of the Reform Corrupted (Reformasi Dikorupsi) movement in 2019.

Jakarta – The Aceh representative office of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) says that it has handed over three alleged cases of gross human rights violations which occurred in Tanah Rencong – as Aceh is known – to Attorney General ST Burhanuddin.

Jakarta – Amnesty International Indonesia has criticised a case involving three Andalas University (Unand) Student Executive Council Student Community (BEM KM) leaders who have been summoned by police over the uploading of a poster reading "President Joko Widodo KKN in the Village of the Dancers".

Gita Irawan, Jakarta – The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) has criticised the appointment of Central Sulawesi State Intelligence Agency (BIN) regional chief (Kabinda) Brigadier General Andi Chandra As’aduddin as the acting (Pj) regent of Seram Bagian Barat in Maluku province.

Laili – The People Movement Alliance (ARB) held a protest action to commemorate May Day, National Education Day and 24 years since reformasi in the Central Java city of Yogyakarta on May 22.

International Labour Day 2022 was commemorated by the Labour Party as a "May Day Fiesta" at the Bung Karno Sports Stadium (GBK) in Jakarta on May 14. An estimated 30-60 thousand workers attended the fiesta. Even if the lower estimate of 30,000 is used it shows an increase in mass mobilisations.

Jakarta – Protesters from the Labour Movement with the People (Gebrak) brought a giant effigy of a rat wearing a tie along with a large book, flags, posters and a banner containing their demands on the administration of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Vice President Ma'ruf Amin to a rally in Central Jakarta today.

Vitorio Mantalean, Jakarta – Resolving gross human rights violations through non-judicial channels or outside of the courts will perpetuate impunity and legal immunity for the perpetrators.

Reza Agustian, Jakarta – Trisakti University students held a commemoration of 24 years since the Trisakti tragedy on May 12, 1998, which was held near the Arjuna Wijaya or Horse Statue in Central Jakarta on Thursday May 12.
