Following the June 27 the Constitutional Court ruling which rejected losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto’s electoral challenge, President and Vice President elect Joko Widodo (left) and Ma’ruf Amin (right) have now been confirmed as the winners of the April presidential elections.
Critics of Widodo’s so called Working Cabinet however say that the reason Widodo and Amin have so much work cut out for them over the next five years is because Widodo failed to address most of the unresolved problems left over by his predecessor former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during his first term in office.
They also point out that many other problems have grown worse under Widodo’s watch – which has seen a decline in Indonesia’s democracy index – citing military and police violence in West Papua, criminalisation and violence against journalists and activists, restrictions on freedom of expression and association, attacks on minority groups, widespread sexual violence against women and children and the growing use of the religion as a political weapon.
