Achmad Nasrudin Yahya, Jakarta – The results of a survey by the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) show that the majority or around 60 percent of respondents believe that corruption in Indonesia has worsened over the last two years.

"The majority of the national public, 60 percent, believe that the level of corruption in Indonesia over the last two years has risen", said LSI Executive Director Djayadi Hanan during a press conference on Sunday August 8.

Hanan explained that the survey results were gathered based on socio-demographic and regional makeup.

Based on socio-demographic makeup, 60 percent of male respondents believe that corruption has increased, 12 believe it has decreased and 27 percent have not experienced any change, while 1 percent did not know or did not answer.

Sixty percent of women respondents meanwhile believe that corruption has increased, 10 percent believe it has decreased and 28 percent have not experienced any change, while 2 percent did not know or did not answer.

From this category it was also found that those who are younger, are ethnic Madurese or Betawi, are white-collar workers and have a medium level of education believe that corruption has increased.

If categorised by region meanwhile, 58 percent of people in rural areas believe corruption has increased, 12 percent believe it has declined, 28 percent have not experienced any change, while 2 percent did not answer.

Meanwhile, 62 percent of people who live in urban areas said that corruption has increased, 11 percent said it had declined, 27 percent have not experienced any change and 1 percent did not answer.

"The public in urban areas, particularly in Banten [West Java], DKI [Jakarta] and Central Java, along with the public in three out of four oversample regions, have the perception that the level of corruption is higher", explained Hanan.

The survey was conducted by telephone contact with 1,200 respondents spread across four provinces, namely North Sumatra, Central Java, Eat Kalimantan and North Sulawesi with 400 respondents from each respective region.

The simple random sampling survey method used had a margin of error of 2.88 percent and a 95 percent level of confidence.
